حاول المؤلف في هذه الدراسة أن يقدم صورة عن النقد الأدبي عند العرب منذ أواخر القرن الثاني الهجري حتي القرن الثامن ، أو من الفترة الممتدة بين الأصمعي و ابن خلدون - في مشرق العالم الإٍسلامي و مغربه - و قد اتبع منهج التدرج الزمني ، لأنه يعين علي تمثل النقد في صورة حركة متطورة ، بين مد و جزر أو ارتفاع و هبوط ، علي مر السنين . و قد عمل إلي الوقوف عند القضايا الكبري ، معرضا عن جزئيات الأمور التي تصرف الدارس عن إبراز الدور الفكري للنقاد العرب .
