صفحه ي اول رمان:
پرده هاي ضخيم زربفت «مِلک اربابي هندرسُن» يا بقول معروف، «هِندرسُن مانُر» اجازه نميداد صداي پرندگان در بيرون به گوش برسد. اليويا هندرسن، گيسوان بلند مشکي اش را به کنار زد و به صورت برداري دقيق از چيني هاي پدرش ادامه داد. روز تابستاني گرمي بود و خواهرش طبق معمول جايي رفته بود. پدرش، ادوارد هندرسن ، آن روز مهمان داشت و منتظر آمدن وکلايش بود. خانواده هندرسن در کُرتن-آن-هادسن منزل داشتند که با اتومبيل تقريبا سه ساعت تا نيويورک فاصله داشت و وکلايش غالبا زود به زود به ديدنش مي آمدند. ادوارد هندرسن تمامي دارايي هايش را از همين جا اداره ميکرد، همين طور نظارت بر کارخانجات فولادش که به نام خود او بود، از همين جا انجام ميشد، اما خودش ديگر آن را اداره نميکرد. او دو سال پيش، يعني سال ????، خود را به طور کامل بازنشسته کرده بود و دارايي هايش را حفظ کرده و آنها را به دست وکلايش و کساني که کارخانه اش را برايش اداره ميکردند، سپرده بود. از آنجايي که او فرزند پسر نداشت، ديگر مانند قبل ديگر علاقه اي به کار و تجارت نداشت. دخترهايش هرگز کارخانه فولاد او را اداره نميکردند. با آنکه ?? سال بيش نداشت، اما طي سال هاي اخير، سلامتي اش به خطر افتاده بود و ترجيح ميداد دنيا را از فراز همان مکان بلند و آرامش بخش در کرتن-آن-هادسن، نظاره کند. ادوارد از اينجا ميتوانست دنيا را به آرامي تماشا کند و در ضمن محل زندگي سالم و امني براي دو دخترش بود.بايد اذعان نمود اگر چه زندگي در آنجا چندان پرشو و هيجان نبود، اما آنها هرگز حوصله شان سر نميرفت، چون در سرتاسر هادسن و در ميان خانواده هاي بزرگ، دوستان زيادي داشتند.
ملک اربابي«وَن کُرت لَندت» و «شپاردز» در ايالت «اُلدليندهرست» ، در نزديکي آنها واقع شده بود. «جِي گولد» پدر «هلن» شپارد، بيست سال پيش درگذشته بود و مال و منال هنگفتي براي دخترش به ارث گذاشته بود. او و شوهرش «فينلي شپارد»، به خوبي از اين اموال استفاده ميکردند و غالبا ميهماني هاي زيادي ميدادند و از جوانان آن حوالي دعوت به عمل مي آوردند. خانواده ثروتمند «راکفلر» نيز همان سال از ساختن «کايکوت» در «تاري تاون» فارغ شده بودند، با آن باغ ها و زمين هاي باشکوه و خانه اي که با منزل ادوارد هندرسن در کرتن_آن-هادسن، در شمال شان، در رقابت بود و برابري ميکرد.
هندرسن مانر خانه زيبايي بود که مردم از کيلومترها براي ديدنش مي آمدند و از درب ورودي بزرگ به باغ زيباي آن خيره ميشدند. ديدن ساختمان خانه از اين درب ممکن نبود، چرا که با درختان بلندي احاطه شده بود و چندين پيچ کوچک ميخورد تا به گذرگاه اصلي ساختمان برسد. خود ساختمان بر روي صخره اي واقع شده بود و منظره بسيار زيبايي از رودخانه هادسن را در زير پا داشت. ادوارد عاشق اين بود که ساعت ها در اتاق مطالعه اش بنشيند و گذر ايام را از نظر بگذراند، به ياد روزهاي گذشته، دوستان قديم و روزهايي که زندگي اش به مراتب سريع تر از حال، گذشته بود… بدست آوردن کارخانه پدرش در طول سال هاي دهه ???? … و تأثير داشتن در بسياري از تحولات صنعتي اواخر قرن اخير. در آن زمان، زندگي پرمشغله اي داشت. زندگيش در جواني نسبت به حال بسيار متفاوت بود. ادوارد هندرسن در جواني ازدواج کرده بود و همسر و پسرش را در اثر ديفتيري از دست داده بود. پس از اين واقعه، سال ها تنها زندگي کرده بود تا اينکه اليزابت سر راهش قرار گرفت. او تمامي ان چيزي بود که هر مردي ميتوانست در رويايش داشته باشد، همچون رگه اي براق و درخشان از نور، ستاره اي دنباله دار در آسمان تابستان، بسيار ناپايدار، مبهوت کننده، زيبا، اما بسيار زودگذر. آنها در همان سال اول آشنايي شان با هم ازدواج کردند. اليزابت ?? سال داشت و ادوارد در اوايل چهل سالگي بود. او در سن ?? سالگي به هنگام وضع حمل درگذشت و اين باعث وحشت ادوارد شده بود. پس از مرگ او ادوارد حتي سخت تر از معمول کار ميکرد Novel: mirror image
