علي بن عبد الله بن حمدان التغلبي الربعي، أبو الحسن، سيف الدولة. الأمير، صاحب المتنبي وممدوحه. يقال: لم يجتمع بباب أحد من الملوك بعد الخلفاء ما اجتمع بباب سيف الدولة من شيوخ العلم ونجوم الدهر ! ولد في ميافارقين (بديار بكر) ونشأ شجاعاً مهذباً عالي الهمة. وملك واسطاً وما جاورها. ومال إلى الشام فامتلك دمشق. وعاد إلى حلب فملكها سنة 333هـ، وتوفي فيها. ودفن في ميافارقين. أخباره ووقائعه مع الروم كثيرة. وكان كثير العطايا، مقرباً لأهل الأدب، يقول الشعر الجيد الرقيق، وقد ينُسب إليه ما ليس له. وهو أول من ملك حلب من بني حمدان. وله أخبار كثيرة مع الشعراء، خصوصاً المتنبي والسريّ الرفاء والنامي والببغاء والوأواء وتلك الطبقة. ومما كتب في سيرته (سيف الدولة وعصر الحمدانيين - ط) لسامي الكيالي.
