خلاصه اي از داستان رمان:
مرگ ناهنگام پدر ليکن باعث شد که ليکن ?? ساله را مجبور کند تا
براي برادر و مادرش سنگ صبور باشد. ظاهراً به نظر مي رسيد که
از اين اتفاق، ليکن محکم و انعطاف پذير شده است، اما درون او ، از ياس و نااميدي پر شده بود.
در اين زمان ويل کوپر وارد زندگي او مي شود.
جوان ?? ساله ي جذابي که در همسايگي آن ها زندگي مي کند.
از لحظه ي آشنايي آن ها،
ويل و ليکن وارد يک رابطه ي احساسي مي شوند، و ويل اميد را در دل ليکن زنده مي کند.
رفت و آمد هاي روزانه براي آن ها دردآور مي شود طوري که ….

اين زمان اونقدري طولاني بود که برادر کوچيک ? ساله ام تونست با اين موضوع کنار بياد و
زماني که از پدرم تعريف مي کرديم گريه نکنه ، اما براي ما هنوز تازه بود و
مجبور بوديم از عهده شرايط مالي جديدي که به وجود اومده بود به تنهايي بربيايم.
ديگه قادرنبوديم که تو تگزاس و تو تنها خونه اي که مي شناختيم، بمونيم.
مامانم در حالي که کليد خونه رو بهم مي داد گفت:
- ليک*، مثل افسرده ها نباش. فکر کنم از ميشيگان خوشت بياد.
هيچ وقت اسم اصليمو صدا نمي زد،
با پدرم ? ماه تموم سر انتخاب اسمم دعوا کردن،

با اين حال هيچ کدوم حتي يک بار هم منو به اين اسم صدا نزدن.
اداي مامانمو در آوردم و گفتم:
- مامان، لطفا مثل اين آدمايي که مستن نباش! من از ميشيگان بدم مياد.
مامانم اين تواناييو داشت که کل حرفاشو با نگاهش بزنه،و معني نگاه خيره اشو قهميدم.
از پله هاي ايوان بالا اومدم و قبل از اينکه از اين خونه خارج بشم، به همه جا نگاه انداختم.
تموم اتاقا به طرز وحشتناکي خالي شده بود،
اين خونه با اون خونه اي که قبلا توش زندگي مي کرديم زمين تا آسمون فرق داشت.
شش ماه گذشته هجومي از احساسات رو در برداشت که همه ي اون ها غم انگيز بودن،
