خلاصه اي از داستان رمان:
شش ماه از برگشتن کي را از رگد کوو ميگذرد، بعد از تعريف کردن وقايع رخ داده در رگد کوو براي مرکز فرماندهي، از آنجايي که حرفهايش را باور نکردند از کار معلق ميشود. زماني که به دنبال نشانه اي از حضور خون آشام ها و ومپايرس ها ميگشت، زني مرموز او را براي حفاظت از دختر ?? ساله اش کايلا از دست غريبه اي که در کمين اوست، استخدام ميکند…

ـ کابوس‌ها چي؟
ـ هنوزم مي‌بينيشون؟
ـ آره.
دکتر رو به رويم نشسته بود و با دست‌هاي لاغرش پرونده‌ام را روي دامن پشمي‌اش نگه داشته بود. از پشت شيشه‌هاي عينکش با چشم‌هاي خاکستري روشنش به من نگاه کرد. چهره‌اش بد نبود ولي به خاطر موهاي بورش که سفت و محکم به شکل گوجه‌اي بالاي گردنش بسته بود، چهره‌اش سخت و تقريبا عصباني به نظر مي‌رسيد. نمي‌توانست بيشتر از سي و پنج سال داشته باشد ولي به خاطر عينکش و جوري که موهايش را بسته بود چهل و پنج ساله به نظر مي‌رسيد. به نظر آدمي شايسته و خشک و رسمي مي‌آمد ولي مي‌توانستم ببينم که چيزي بيشتر از اين درمورد او وجود دارد.
از پشت لبه‌ي عينکش به من نگاه کرد و گفت:« هميشه يه جورن؟»
هرچند مي‌دانستم منظورش چيست ولي پرسيدم:« درمورد مامانم؟ آره اکثرشون درمورد مامانمه.»
مشتاق نسبت به هرکلمه‌اي که مي‌گفتم پشت سر هم سوال مي‌پرسيد. پرسيد:« اکثرشون؟»
تکرار کردم:« اکثرشون.»
پرونده‌ام را باز کرد و خودکاري از روي ميز برداشت:« بقيشون چي؟ اونايي که درمورد مامانت نيستن؟»
ـ دکتر کيتس? من شش ماهه که دارم ميام شما رو مي‌بينم. خودتون بقيشو مي‌دونين.
ـ خون آشاما؟
بدون اينکه چشم ازش بردارم گفتم:« آره.»
خودکارش را روي کاغذ نگه داشت و مصرانه گفت:« درموردشون بهم بگو.»
ـ چرا؟ چه اهميتي داره؟
سعي مي‌کردم که عصباني نشوم. ادامه دادم:« تو که حرفمو باور نمي‌کني… هيچکس باور نمي‌کنه. اين دليل اينه که من اينجام، درسته؟ مرکز فرماندهي مي‌خواد بدونه که من ديوونه‌ام؟… مي‌خواد بدونه من صلاحيت اينو دارم که دوباره به عنوان پلس تو خيابونا باشم. واقعا همه‌ي اينا به خاطر همين نيست؟»
با صدايي آمرانه گفت:« مي‌توني کارفرماهاتو به خاطر شک کردن بهت مقصر بدوني، کي را؟»
ـ البته که مقصر مي‌دونمشون. اونا کسايي بودن که منو فرستادن رگد کوو.
پرونده ام را ورق زد و گفت:« اينجور که من دارم مي‌بينم تو خودت داوطلب شدي بري کي را.» بعد سرش را بالا گرفت و گفت:« کسي مجبورت نکرد.»
تشر زدم:« ولي اگه مي‌دونستم…» بعد حرفم را قطع کردم.
دوباره با همون صداي آمرانه گفت:« چيو مي‌دونستي؟»
