خلاصه ي از داستان رمان:
داستان درباره زندگي دختري است که از يک خانواده ي فرانسوي هستن و درامدشان از استعمار ويتنام به دست مي آيد.دختر داستان دو برادر داره که يکيشون غمخوار دختره و اون يکي بدسرشت و کج رفتاره.

روزي که ديگر عمري از من گذشته بود، در سرسراي مکاني عمومي، مردي به طرفم آمد و بعد از معرفي خودش، گفت: مدت هاست که مي شناسمتان، همه مي گويند در سال هاي جواني قشنگ بوده ايد، ولي من آمده ام اينجا تا به شما بگويم که چهره فعليتان به مراتب قشنگ تر از وقتي است که جوان بوده ايد، من اين چهره شکسته را بيشتر از چهره جوانيتان دوست دارم.
اغلب به تصويري مي انديشم که فقط خودم آن را مي بينم، تا به حال هم حرفي از آن نزده ام، هميشه هم جلو چشمم است، با همان سکوتِ هميشگي، و حيرت انگيز. از بين همه ي عکس ها همين يکي را مي پسندم، خودم را در آن مي شناسم، از ديدن آن مشعوف مي شوم.
