داستان درباره ي دو دختر به اسم سيسيلي و کاتي از طبقه متوسط و فروشنده هستش که با پس انداز حقوق خود براي تعطيلات به يک هتل گران قيمت ساحلي مي روند. راجر بوکانانِ ثروتمند نيز براي درمان ذات الريه به همراه برادر و زن برادرش به اين هتل آمده اند. راجر با شنيدن نظرات غيرمحترمانه سيسيلي در مورد خودش و زن برادرش نظرش نسبت به اين دختر جوان جلب ميشود .اما….
صفحه ي اول رمان:
راجر با شنيدن نام خود چرتش پاره شد و از آن حالت نيمه بيهوشي و خواب آلود بيرون آمد و متوجه شد که بايد چند ساعتي خوابيده باشد. هنگاميکه راجر بوکانان روي صندلي راحتي در ايوان هتل دراز کشيد آفتاب ملايمي بصورتش تابيده بود و زمزم? امواج دريا گوشش را نوازش ميداد ولي اکنون که چشم مي گشود هوا رو به تاريکي ميرفت و نسيم سردي ميوزيد.
ناگهان صداي جوان و پرشوري سکوت را در هم شکست و گفت:
_ من افرادي مثل جناب آقاي بوکانان را از خود راضي و غيرقابل تحمل ميدانم، ميداني « کاتي » اين مرد پيشخدمت مخصوص و شوفر و دو اتومبيل با خود به هتل آورده، ديروز چهار دفعه لباس عوض کرد و هر شب همراه شام شامپاني مي نوشد.
مخاطب در جواب خنده ملايمي کرد و مجددا!ً آهنگ اهانت آميز صحبت کننده با يک دنيا انزجار چنين ادامه داد:
_ و اما زن برادرش، هر کس چنين لباسهاي گرانبها بپوشد و گل الماس روي کفش بزند زيبا بنظر مي آيد. Novel: a novel of love and a lie

Story about two girls named Katie Sicily and the savings of the middle class and the seller were his rights for the holidays are an expensive hotel beach. Roger Buchanan rich for the treatment of pneumonia along with brother and his wife have come to this hotel. Roger of Sicily disrespectful hear about himself and his brother's wife is attracted to this young girl, but ....

Mild laughter in the audience answer again! Offensive songs speak of a world outrage continued:
