خلاصه ي از داستان رمان:
ميدان توپخانه ي استانبول در قرن نوزدهم ، از جمله ميدانهايي به شمار مي رفت که هميشه در جنب و جوش بود و افراد پيوسته در آنجا به همديگر مي رسيدند و در حقيقت محل قول و قرارهاي آنها محسوب مي شد.
اما در آن روز ، يعني شانزدهم ماه اوت سال ???? فعاليت و جنب و جوش هميشگي در آن ميدان به چشم نمي نمي خورد. طلوع خورشيد که به رنگ سرخ بر روي گنبدهاي مساجد و مناره ها و سنگهاي خيابانهاي شهر استانبول يا به عبارتي تنگه ي بسفر را زينت مي داد.

در ميان سکوت حاکم بر ميدان توپخانه ي شهر استانبول ، دو نفر که گاهي گام بر مي داشتند و لحظه اي نگران به اطراف خود مي نگريستند ، ديده مي شدند. از ظاهر آنها معلوم مي شد که اروپايي هستند.
آن دو خارجي ، از هلند مي آمدند. وان ميتن که متولد شهر روتردام بود. يکي از بازرگانان معروف جهاني به شمار مي رفت. طي سالهايي طولاني با ترکيه معامله داشت و مرتب به شهر استانبول مي امد و به راحتي مي توانست به زبان ترکي استانبولي صحبت کند.
خدمتکارش که هيچ تفاوتي با او نداشت و او نيز اهل هلند و نامش نيز برونو بود ، در خدمتگزاري به اربابش از هيچ کوششي فروگذار نمي کرد. با اينکه قيافه اي خشن داشت اما در عين حال رقيق القلب بود. او هيچ موقع از گفته هاي اطرافيان و دوستانش رنجيده نمي شد و با خوشرويي به آنان پاسخ مي داد.
برونوي پيشخدمت حدود چهل و پنج سال داشت. بزرگترين نقطه ضعف او تنفر از مسافرت بود. اما سرنوشت او را به پيشخدمتي بازرگاني سيّار مثل وان ميتن درآورده بود که در نتيجه پيوسته مسافرت مي کرد. بدين دليل ، چون علاقه اي به مسافرت نداشت ، هميشه در سفرهايش لاغر و ضعيف مي شد.
در آن روز به وي دنبال اربابش وان ميتن به خاک شهر قديمي بيزانس ، که اکنون پايتخت امپراطوري عثماني به شمار مي رفت و به نام استانبول تغيير نام داده بود ،
