خلاصه ي از داستان رمان:
ن و شوهر به همراه دختر و پسرشان ، خانواده ي خوشبختي بودند تا اينکه دختر ? ساله شان طي يک حادثه فوت کرده و شيرازه ي زندگي از دستشون خارج ميشود. مادر خانواده غمگين و افسرده ميشود و پدر گوشه گير ! در اين بين پسر خانواده به تفريحات بيرون از خانه کشيده شده و با دختري آشنا ميشود که به علت باردار بودن از خانواده اش طرد شده. .پسر خانواده به او علاقه مند ميشود و بعد از گذشت چندماه موضوع رو با خانواده اش مطرح ميکند ، بعد از چند روز کشمکش و صحبت مادر خانواده وسوسه ميشود آن دختر را پيش خودش بياورد تا بچه اش را به دنيا آورده و به آنها دهد ؛ بعد به نزد خانواده اش برگردد …

آني ويتاکر شيفته ي همه چيز کريسمس بود شيفته ي هوا،درختان چراغاني شده اي که در چمن جلوي همه ي خانه ها مي درخشيد و بابانوئل هاي ساخته شده از لامپهاي نئون که روي بام خانه هاي مردم قرار داشت آني شيفته ي سرودهاي کريسمس،به انتظار آمدن بابانوئل نشستن اسکيت بازي روي يخ و شيرکاکائوي داغ نوشيدن و پس از آن به همراه مادر ذرت هاي بو داده را نخ کشيدن و با دهان باز و چشمان گشاده از حيرت به تماشاي چراغاني زيباي درخت کريسمس خانه نشستن بود.حالا به محض اينکه مادرش به او اجازه داد که آنجا زير نور درخت بنشيند چهره ي پنج ساله ي او غرق شادي و اعجاب شد.
اليزابت ويتاکر چهل و يکس اله بود که آني به دنيا آمد و تولد او اليزابت را غافلگير کرد دير زماني بود که اليزابت روياي داشتن فرزندي ديگر چشم پوشيده بود در ان هنگام تامي ده ساله بود پيش از اين سالها کوشيده بودند و سرانجام با واقعيت تنها يک بچه داشتن کنار آمدند تامي بچه ي فوق العاده اي بود و ليز جان همواره احساس خوشبختي مي کردند تامي عضو تيم فوتبال و بيس بال و زمستانها ستاره ي تيم هاکي روي يخ بود پسر خوبي که انچه را از او انتظار داشتند انجام مي داد در مدرسه شاگردي خوب بود و در خانه پسري ملايم در عين حال به ان اندازه شيطنت داشت که مطمئن شوند بچه اي سالم و طبيعي است اگر چه بچه اي بي عيب و نقص و نمونه نبود اما پسر بسيار خوبي بود پسري که برايشان بسيار عزيز بود مانند مادرش موهايش بود و همچون پدرش چشماني نافذ به رنگ آبي داشت شوخ طبع و تيز ذهن بود و بعد از شوک اوليه به نظر مي رسيد که توانسته خود را با مسئله داشتن خواهري کوچک تطبيق دهد.
در پنج سال و نيم گذشته از هنگامي که خواهر کوچکش به دنيا امد از ديد تامي چنان بود که گويي خورشيد تنها به خاطر اني طلوع و غروب ميکند آني کوچولويي ظريف با دهاني پر خنده بود که هر گاه او و تامي با هم بودند صداي خنده اش در همه جاي خانه مي پيچيد.آني هر روز مشتاقانه به انتظار آمدن تامي از مدرسه مي نشست و بعد با هم در آشپزخانه مي نشستند و شير و شيريني مي خورندن پس از به دنيا آمدن آني ليز به جاي کار تمام وفت به تدريس پاره وفت پرداخت و گفت که مي خواهد از همه ي لحظات بودن در کنار فرزندش لذت ببرد و لذت هم برد آن دو همواره با يکديگر بودند.
ليز حتي فرصتي يافت که دو سالي در مهد کودک آني به کار داوطلبانه بپردازد و اکنون نيز در همان کودکستاني که اني مي رفت در تهيه ي برنامه هاي هنري همکاري مي کرد بعد از ظهرها با هم شيريني نان و بيسکويت مي پختند و يا در آشپزخانه ي دنج و راحتشان مي نشستند و ليز ساعت ها براي اني کتاب مي خواند زندگي گرم و صميمانه اي داشتند و هر چهار نفرشان خود را از بسياري از چيزها که براي مردم ديگر اتفاق مي افتاد مصون احساس ميکردند جان به خوبي از آنان نگهداري مي کرد او صاحب بزرگترين عمده فروشي مواد غذايي منطقه بود و زندگي آبرومندي براي خانواده اش فراهم کرده بود عمده فروشي پيش از جان به پدر و پدر بزرگش تعلق داشت وضعيت مالي جان از ابتدا خوب بود انان خانه اي زيبا در بهترين منطقه ي شهر داشتند ثروتمند نبودند اما از نوساناتي که در زندگي کشاورزان پيش مس آمد و بد اقبالي هايي که مردم در کسب و کارهاي ديگر به علت تغيير مد و سليقه با آن رو به رو مي شدند مصون بودند همه طالب مواد غذايي خوب بودند و جان ويتاکر بود که نيازشان را برآورده ميکرد او مردي مهربان و دلسوز بود و اميدوار بود که تامي هم روزي وارد کسب و کار او شود Novel novel gift
