صفحه ي اول رمان:
فرزند آسيابان غرق در فکر، قدم برمي داشت. پسر بلند بالاي چهارده ساله اي سوخته از باد و آفتاب بود و انديشه هاي بسياري در سر داشت.
وقتي بزرگ شود کبريت ساز خواهد شد. اين کار به نحو بسيار لذت بخشي خطرناک خواهد بود؛ گوگرد بر انگشتان خواهد داشت و به اين ترتيب هيچ کس جرأت نخواهد کرد که به سويش دست دراز کند. به سبب کسب و کار پرخطرش، رفقايش احترام بسياري برايش قايل خواهند شد.
در دل جنگل، پرندگان را با نگاه دنبال مي کرد. همه شان را مي شناخت. مي دانست که آشيانه هايشان را کجا بيابد، به معناي فريادهايشان پي مي برد و با نداهاي گوناگون به آنها پاسخ مي داد. بارها و بارها گلوله هاي کوچکي از خمير که با آرد آسيا ساخته شده بود به سويشان افکنده بود.
