این سوره در مکه نازل شده و در آن به نکات زیادی اشاره گردیده است، از جمله مطالبی پیرامون، عظمت قرآن، توحید، آفرینش آسمانها و زمین، تسخیر ماه و خورشید، آفرینش میوه‌ها و گیاهان، معاد و عدل الهی، مسئولیت مردم، وفای به عهد و صله رحم، صبر و ترک انتقام‌جویی، کسب آرامش واقعی در پرتو ایمان به خدا و سرنوشت شوم مخالفان انبیاء. سوره مورد بحث، سیزدهمین سوره قرآن است و شماره آیات آن از ۴۳ تجاوز نمی‌کند و در مورد نزول آیات آن در مکه یا مدینه میان مفسران اختلاف وجود دارد، ولی دقت در مضامین آیات آن، که خود یکی از طرق شناسایی مکی و مدنی بودن سوره‌هاست، روشن می‌سازد که آیات آن مکی است؛ زیرا در این سوره دربارهٔ موضوعاتی بحث و گفتگو شده است که تنها محیط مکه ایجاب می‌کرد چنین بحث‌هایی مطرح شود. برای نمونه کافی است آیه پنجم و هفتم آن را بررسی کنید؛ زیرا خداوند در آیه پنجم، گفتار منکران معاد را نقل می‌کند و می‌گوید: تعجب از گفتار کسانی است که می‌گویند:
