امر الله تعالى عباده بالاستغفار في العديد من الآيات القرآنية، منها قوله: (وَاسْتَغْفِرُوا اللَّـهَ إِنَّ اللَّـهَ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ)، كما أنّه أمر رسوله محمد عليه الصلاة والسلام بالاستغفار، فقال: (وَاسْتَغْفِرْ لِذَنبِكَ وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ وَاللَّـهُ يَعْلَمُ مُتَقَلَّبَكُمْ وَمَثْوَاكُمْ)، كما أنّ من أسماء اله تعالى الغفار، ومن صفاته أنّه غافر الذنب، وذو المغفرة، ويُعرّف الاستغفار بأنه طلب العبد من ربه جلّ وعلا المغفرة والستر في الحياة الدنيا والحياة الآخرة، وللاستغفار العديد من الفوائد والثمار التي تعود على العبد في دنياه وآخرته.
