ผู้ทายจะเริ่มต้นการทายด้วยคำขึ้นต้นว่า "อะไรเอ่ย"
ต่อจากนั้นก็จะเริ่มทายถึงสิ่งของ คน ต้นไม้ ผักสด ผลไม้ สัตว์ ฯลฯ
โดยนำลักษณะเด่นหรือนำไปเปรียบเทียบกับสิ่งอื่นที่ใกล้เคียงกัน
เป็นการชี้แนะเพื่อให้ทายถูก อาจมีปัญหาเชาวน์ ซึ่งผู้ตอบจะต้องมีความรู้รอบตัว
และมีความจำอย่างดีว่า คำตอบนั้นคืออะไร ถ้าทายถูกจะเป็นผู้ตั้งปัญหา
