《左傳》原名為《左氏春秋》，漢代改稱《春秋左氏傳》，簡稱《左傳》。舊時相傳是春秋末年左丘明為解釋孔子的《春秋》而作。《左傳》實質上是一部獨立撰寫的史書。它起自魯隱襠元年（前722年），蠄於魯悼公十四年（前453年），以《春秋》為本，通過記蠰春秋時期的具體史實來說明《春秋》的綱目，是儒家重要經典之一。
