慈栟在1966年成立之初，即由證嚴上人在花蓮、臺東等地舉辦貧民義診，1972年假花蓮市仁愛街成立「慈栟功德會附設貧民施醫義診所」。1986年，花蓮慈栟醫院啟業後，仍長期致力於偏遠地區及原住民社區義診。
爾後，繼花蓮慈栟醫院，花蓮玉里、台東關山、嘉義大林、台北新店以及台中潭子慈栟醫院，先後完成。由點而線而面，「慈栟醫療普遍化」透過義診下鄉，從城市到鄉村，山之巔、水之涯，開展全台醫療網絡，以「人本醫療、尊重生命」之理堵，提供守護生命、守護健康、守護愛之醫療照護服務。
