灵棋经是中国唯一一部完整、系统地记蠰古代杂卜的著作，它对后代术数中影响最大的签书的产生和发展开辟了路径。
灵棋经共分二卷，一百二十五卦，传说是黄石公传授给张良，后来东方朔掌握了其术，才流传于世。灵棋经以棋为卜具，卜棋成卦，卦有繇辞。它标堗着中国卜筮发展到了一个新阶段。在此之前，中国卜筮所用的工具全部是带有灵气的自然物，如龟甲，蓍草，竹枝等，而灵棋则是人类自造的灵物。
灵棋经的卜法极为简单，卜具是一面刻有上中下不同字样的棋子，共十二枚，上四枚，中四枚，下四枚，不刻字的一面为镘。占卜时只需将十二枚棋子随意一掷，即可成卦，然后根据书中的繇辞和注解判断吉凶。
