醜小鴨，是安徒生童話中的知名角色
由醜小鴨於小時醜陋變為長大後美麗的故事，說明「人不可貌相」的道理，因為只要肯努力，人所能發揮的潛力是極大的，就如醜小鴨的蛻變一樣，努力過後的人也有可能會你人有士別三日，刮目相看之感。
另一方面，亦可總結出「莫欺少年窮」的道理，少年人只要肯努力，即時現在處境並不太好，最後仍有出人頭地的機會。
安徒生本身就是典型的醜小鴨，在他小時候，家境貧困，其父親是個鞋匠，在他年幼時已病逝。其父去世後，母親亦改嫁。安徒生在十四歲因生活所逼離開故鄉到丹麥首都哥本哈根謀生。
