내포지역의 역사, 문화, 생태를 아우르는 내포문화숲길 내포문화숲길은 가야산 주변의 4개시군 (서산시,당진시,홍선군,예산군) 이 내포 지역의 역사, 문화, 생태적 가치를 바탕으로 연결한 장거리 도보 여행길이며총 거리는 약 320km입니다. 내포지역의 역사, 문화, 생태적 가치를 바탕으로 지금 우리네 삶을 천천히 돌아보고 내포지역에서 살고 있고 또 앞으로 살아가야 할 우리 아이들의 미래를 준비해 나가기 위한 나눔과 성찰의 순례길입니다. 내포문화숲길에서 내포란? 내포란 사전적 의미로 바다나 호수가 육지로 휘어 들어간 부분 즉 내륙 깊숙이 바다와 연결되는 물길을 통하여 포구가 형성되어 있는 곳을 의미하는데, 조선후기 실학자 이중환의 저서 택리지의 팔도총론에서는 내포에 대하여 다음과 같이 적고 있습니다. 『충청도에서는 내포(內浦)가 가장 좋다. 공주에서 서북쪽으로 200리 쯤 에 가야산이 있다. 가야산의 앞뒤에 있는 열 고을을 함께 내포(內浦)라 한다. 지세(地勢)가 한 모퉁이에 멀리 떨어져 있고 또 큰 길목이 아니므로 임진(壬辰)과 병자(丙子)의 두 차례 난리에도 여기에는 미치지 않았다. 땅이 기름지고 평평하다. 또 생선과 소금이 매우 흔하므로 부자가 많고 여러 대를 이어 사는 사대부 집이 많다.』 위에서 언급한 가야산 앞뒤의 열 개 고을은 태안,서산,홍주,덕산,예산,신창,대흥,청양,결성,해미를 칭하는 것으로 현재의 행정구역으로 서산시, 당진시, 예산군, 홍성군, 태안군과 보령시, 아산시, 청양군의 일부가 된다고 할 수 있습니다.
