Définition du VTC :
Une voiture de transport avec chauffeur est un moyen de transport de personne mis à disposition uniquement sur réservation préalable avec un conducteur professionnel obligatoirement. Elle sont héritières des « voitures de remise » créées avec l'apparition des carrosses au XVIIe siècle.
La principale différence avec les "taxis" est que ces derniers sont autorisés à "stationner" ou "marauder" sur la place publique en quête de clients (d'où l’appellation de « voiture de place »), alors que les VTC ne peuvent travailler que sur réservation préalable et doivent donc être stationnés en dehors de la voie publique lorsqu'ils ne sont pas commandés par un client (dans leur garage, bâtiment que l'on appelait auparavant une "remise" d'où l’appellation de « voitures de remise »).
La « maraude électronique » lui est interdite par la loi Thévenoud.
