The band is known as metalcore genre on their debut Sounding the Seventh Trumpet, which contains a lot of vocals scream. The band changed their style on their third album, City of Evil, which features melodic vocals and power ballads. The band continued to explore new sounds with Avenged Sevenfold's self-titled release and enjoyed success before their drummer, James "The Rev" Owen Sullivan, died of heart disease due to the combined effect of drugs and alcohol in his body in 2009. Despite deceased drummer, band this continued with the help of former Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy to release and toured in support of Nightmare, their fifth album in 2010, which became the top album on the Billboard 200.
