Kata “tarawih” merupakan bentuk jamak (plural) dari tarwihah, artinya
istirahat untuk menghilangkan kepenatan, berasal dari kata ar-rahah
(rehat) yang berarti hilangnya kesulitan dan keletihan.
Kata tarwihah pada mulanya digunakan untuk majelis secara umum. Kemudian
kata itu digunakan untuk menunjukkan majelis yang diadakan setelah empat
rakaat pada malam-malam bulan Ramadhan.
Pada suatu malam di bulan Ramadan, Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘Alaihi
Wasallam keluar menuju masjid untuk mendirikan shalat malam. Lalu
datanglah beberapa sahabat dan bermakmum di belakang beliau. Ketika
Shubuh tiba, orang-orang berbincang-bincang mengenai hal tersebut. Pada
malam selanjutnya, jumlah jamaah semakin bertambah daripada sebelumnya.
