NIK adalah kombinasi dari 16 angka dengan masing-masing angka mempunyai arti dan informasi tertentu.
1. Digit pertama dan kedua merupakan informasi propinsi
2. Digit ketiga dan keempat merupakan informasi kabupaten atau kota
3. Digit kelima dan keenam merupakan informasi kecamatan
4. Digit ketujuh dan kedelapan merupakan informasi tanggal lahir. Untuk jenis kelamin laki-laki, kedua digit ini ditulis dengan angka 01-31. Sedangkan untuk jenis kelamin perempuan kedua digit ini ditulis dengan angka tanggal lahir ditambah dengan 40.
5. Digit kesembilan dan kesepuluh merupakan informasi bulan lahir
6. Digit kesebelas dan keduabelas merupakan informasi tahun lahir
7. Untuk empat digit terakhir merupakan angka hasil dari komputerisasi untuk membedakan dengan data lainnya supaya tidak terjadi duplikasi
