Sebetulnya aku tidak ingin bercerita banyak tentang masa laluku. Maklum, masa laluku sangat kelam. Namun, setelah kupikir, siapa tahu perjalanan hidupku ini bisa menjadi pelajaran bagi orang lain. Baiklah, aku bersedia membagi pengalaman hidupku pada para pembaca. Insya Allah, ada gunanya.
Aku lahir dengan nama Jeffry Al Buchori Modal pada 12 April 1973 di Jakarta. Waktu aku lahir, keluargaku memang sudah menetap di Jakarta. Aku lahir sebagai anak tengah, maksudku anak ke-3 dari lima bersaudara. Tiga saudara kandungku laki-laki, dan si bungsu adalah perempuan. Layaknya bersaudara, hubungan kami berlima cukup dekat. Sekadar bertengkar, sih, wajar saja. Apalagi, jarak usia kami tidak berjauhan.
Apih (panggilan Jefri untuk ayahnya, Red.), M. Ismail Modal, adalah pria bertubuh tinggi besar asli Ambon, sedangkan Umi, begitu aku biasa memanggil ibu, Tatu Mulyana asli Banten. Apih mendidik kami berlima dengan sangat keras. Tapi, kalau tidak begitu, aku tidak akan merasakan manfaat seperti sekarang. Kalau kami sampai lupa salat atau mengaji, wah, jangan ditanya hukuman yang akan diberikan Apih. Dalam hal agama, Apih dan Umi memang mendidik kami secara ketat.
Namun, sebetulnya Umi adalah seorang ibu yang amat sabar dan lembut dalam menghadapi anak-anaknya. Apih pun orang yang selalu bersikap obyektif. Dia akan membela keluarganya mati-matian bila memang keluarganya yang benar. Sebaliknya dia tidak segan-segan menyalahkan kami bila memang berbuat salah. I was born with the name Jeffry Al Buchori Capital on April 12, 1973 in Jakarta. When I was born, my family was already living in Jakarta. I was born as a middle child, I mean the 3rd child of five siblings. Three male siblings, and the youngest is female. Like the brothers, five of us pretty close relationship. Just to fight, anyway, it's natural. Moreover, the age range we're far apart.
