5. The Last Temptation of Christ - Nikos Kazantzakis

BEN-HUR: A TALE OF THE CHRIST is a novel by LEW WALLACE published on November 12, 1880 by Harper & Brothers. Considered "the most influential Christian book of the nineteenth century", it was the best-selling American novel from the time of its publication, superseding Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin (1852). It remained at the top until the publication of Margaret Mitchell's Gone with the Wind (1936). Following release of the 1959 MGM film adaptation of Ben-Hur, which was seen by tens of millions and won 11 Academy Awards in 1960, book sales surpassed Gone with the Wind. Blessed by Pope Leo XIII, the novel was the first work of fiction to be so honored.

In 2003 actor Mel Gibson, a traditionalist Catholic, brought ANNE CATHERINE EMMERICH's vision to prominence as he used her book THE DOLOROUS PASSION OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST as a key source for his movie The Passion of the Christ. Gibson stated that Scripture and "accepted visions" were the only sources he drew on, and a careful reading of Emmerich's book shows the film's high level of dependence on it. On 3 October 2004 Anne Catherine Emmerich was beatified by Pope John Paul II.

THE ROBE is a 1942 historical novel about the Crucifixion of Jesus written by LLOYD C. DOUGLAS. The book was one of the best-selling titles of the 1940s. It entered the New York Times Best Seller list in October 1942, and four weeks later rose to No. 1. It held the position for nearly a year. The Robe remained on the list for another two years, returning several other times over the next several years including when the movie version was released in 1953. The epic film that tells the story of a Roman military tribune who commands the unit that crucifies Jesus. The film was made by 20th Century Fox and is notable for being the first film released in the widescreen process CinemaScope.

While there have been many lives of Christ published, few have received so wide a popular acclamation as FULTON OURSLER's classic tale. Since it was first published in 1949, when it was instantly acclaimed by both the secular and lay press and endorsed by clergy of all faiths, THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD has gone into scores of printings, has been read by millions, and is one of the most successful bestsellers of all time. The Film was nominated for five Academy Awards in 1965, it was produced and directed by George Stevens and distributed by United Artists.

THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST is a 1988 fictional drama film directed by Martin Scorsese. It is a film adaptation of the controversial 1953 novel of the same name by NIKOS KAZANTZAKIS. Like the novel, the film depicts the life of Jesus Christ and his struggle with various forms of temptation including fear, doubt, depression, reluctance and lust. This results in the book and film depicting Christ being tempted by imagining himself engaged in sexual activities, a notion that has caused outrage from some Christians. The movie includes a disclaimer explaining that it departs from the commonly accepted Biblical portrayal of Jesus' life, and is not based on the Gospels.
