Tahlil berasal dari kata hallala-yuhallilu-tahlilan yang artinya membaca kalimat
la ilaha illallah : tiada Tuhan selain Allah. Jadi yang dimaksud dengan tahlil
di sini adalah membaca serangkaian surat-surat Al-Qur’an, ayat-ayat pilihan, dan
kalimat-kalimat zikir pilihan (termasuk di dalamnya membaca la ilaha illallah)
dengan meniatkan pahalanya untuk para arwah dan ditutup dengan do’a.
Sesuai sabda Nabi Muhammad SAW :

Seutama-utama zikir adalah la ilaha illallah (kalimat tahlil). Dan seutama-utama
zikir yang aku dan juga para nabi sebelumku mengucapkan kalimat la ilaha
illallah. Ia adalah kalimat tauhid dan kalimat kemurnian dan keesaan Allah. Ia
juga asma Allah yang teragung.
