Second, the diet and feeding habits of the eagle is very interesting. The eagle feeds mainly on fish but will take advantage of carrion. To catch a fish the eagle approaches in a shallow glide and snatches the fish out of the water with a quick swipe of its talons. An eagle can lift about four pounds. An eagle can eat one pound of fish in about four minutes. Eagles do not have to eat every day but if they wait too long to eat they can get to weak to hunt. These are just some of the interesting things about their diet and feeding habits.
The eagle is also important to the history of the United States. The eagle was chosen June 20, 1782 as the emblem of the United States of America. The eagle represents freedom. It is displayed on the backs of many of our coins with outspread wings. These are some of the reasons why the history of the eagle is very interesting.
Eagles are often informally divided into four group.
Fish eagles:
Sea eagles or fish eagles take fish as a large part of their diets, either fresh or as carrion.
Booted eagles:
Booted eagles or "true eagle have feathered tarsi (lower legs).
Snake eagles:
Snake or serpent eagles are, as the name suggests, adapted to hunting reptiles.
Harpy eagles:
Harpy eagles or "giant forest eagles are large eagles that inhabit tropical forests.
