Ebiet G. Ade lahir di Wonodadi, Banjarnegara, Jawa Tengah pada tanggal 21 April 1954.Ia tinggal di Yogyakarta sejak SD. Selama SMA, ia bergabung Pelajar Islam Indonesia. Pada tahun 1971, ia berhubungan dengan seniman Yogyakarta, termasuk Emha Ainun Nadjib.Dia tertarik dalam puisi dan ingin menjadi seorang penyair.Namun, ia tidak dapat membaca puisi dengan baik. Dia malah menyanyikan puisi-puisinya setelah menambahkan melodi.
