Abu Hamid Muhammad bin Muhammad al-Ghazali (bahasa Arab:. ابو حامد محمد ابن محمد الغزالي; c 1058 - 18 Desember 1111), disingkat sebagai Al-Ghazali dan dikenal sebagai Algazelus atau Algazel untuk dunia abad pertengahan Barat, adalah seorang teolog muslim, ahli hukum, dan filsuf keturunan Persia.
Kitab Mukhtashor ihya' ulumuddin, kitab ihya' sendiri adalah salah satu kitab karangan Abu Hamid Muhammad bin Muhammad al-Ghazali, yang mengulas tentang ilmu tasawwuf. sedangkan kitab mukhtashor ihya' ulumuddin tiada lain adalah ringkasan dari kitab ihya' ulumuddin imam Ghazali. berarti kitab ihya' ulumuddin beliau rangkum sendiri.
Bagai sebuah mozaik, materi dalam kitab ini di ambil dari teks-teks yang tersebar dalam kitab ihya' ulumuddin. al-mursyid al-amin nama lain kitab ini merangkum mutiara-mutiara ihya' ulumuddin secara ringkas, sistematis dan mudah dipahami. Imam Ghazali ( w. 505 h) membuat empat puluh bab dalam kitab ini, di awali dengan bab ilmu dan ta'lim dan ta'allum dan di tutup dengan pembahasan dzikrul maut.
