Ilmu falak adalah ilmu yang mempelajari tentang lintasan benda-benda langit, di antaranya Bumi, Bulan dan Matahari. Benda-benda langit tersebut berjalan sesuai orbitnya masing-masing. Dengan orbit tersebut dapat digunakan untuk mengetahui posisi benda-bend a langit antara satu dengan yang lain.
Selain ilmu falak, ilmu ini juga disebut ilmu rashd karena memerlukan observasi (pengamatan). Menurut Howard R. Turner, oleh kaum Muslim abad pertengahan ilmu ini disebut ilmu miiqaat / sains penentu waktu, yaitu sains mengenai waktu-waktu tertentu yang diterapkan melalui pengamatan langsung dan menggunakan alat serta melalui perhitungan matematis dalam rangka menentukan shalat lima waktu, matahari tenggelam, malam, fajar, lewat tengah malam, dan sore.
