Batu permata sebenarnya adalah sebuah mineral atau batu yang dibentuk dari hasil proses geologi yang unsurnya terdiri atas satu atau beberapa komponen kimia yang mempunyai harga jual tinggi, dan diminati oleh para kolektor. Sebelum dijadikan perhioasan, batu permata harus dipoles terlebih dahulu.
