Atomisme adalah filsafat alam yang berkembang di beberapa peradaban kuno. Di dalam peradaban Barat, atomisme merujuk pada Leukippos dan muridnya, Democritus dari abad ke-5 SM. Pengikut atomisme ini mengajukan teori bahwa dunia alami terdiri dari dua benda yang mendasar, saling berlawanan, dan tidak dapat dibagi -- atom dan kehampaan. Atom tidak dapat diisi oleh sesuatupun, atom bergerak di kehampaan menuju klaster yang berbeda-beda (dan klaster-klaster ini membentuk senyawa-senyawa penghambat).
