Burung pitohui sebenarnya memiliki suara yang indah. Tetapi karena pada permukaan kulit dan bulu-bulunya terdapat racun, maka orang-orang jarang atau tidak berani menangkapnya. Kalau pun dijual, siapa yang mau membeli burung beracun? He.. he.. he.., rupanya inilah cara alami meredam aksi perburuan burung-burung di hutan. Faktanya, populasi burung pitohui di alam liar relatif aman.
Pitohui terdiri atas enam spesies, yang semuanya berada dalam genus Pitohui, dan keluarga Pachycphalidae. Mereka merupakan burung endemik di Tanah Papua, baik di Provinsi Papua dan Papua Barat (Indonesia) maupun negeri tetangga, Papua Nugini Sebagian spesies juga ditemukan di Kepulauan Aru.
Keenam spesies tersebut sama-sama beracun. Yang pertama kali diidentifikasi sebagai burung beracun adalah hooded pitohui, diikuti variable pitohui dan rusty pitohui.
Burung hooded pitohui memiliki warna-warna yang lebih cerah daripada spesies lainnya. Seperti binatang beracun lainnya, pitohui juga memancarkan bau busuk.
Burung ini juga sering menggunakan racunnya untuk menjaga telur-telur dari mangsa binatang predator, yaitu dengan cara menggesekan racun yang berada di tubuhnya pada telur-telurnya.
