Lagu-lagunya menjadi trend baru dalam khasana musik pop Indonesia. Tak heran, Ebiet sempat merajai dunia musik pop Indonesia di kisaran tahun 1979-1983. Sekitar 7 tahun Ebiet mengerjakan rekaman di Jackson Record. Pada tahun 1986, perusahaan rekam yang melambungkan namanya itu tutup dan Ebiet terpaksa keluar. Ia sempat mendirikan perusahaan rekam sendiri EGA Records, yang memproduksi 3 album, Menjaring Matahari, Sketsa Rembulan Emas, dan Seraut Wajah.
Sayang, pada tahun 1990, Ebiet yang "gelisah" dengan Indonesia, akhirnya memilih "bertapa" dari hingar bingar indutri musik dan memilih berdiri di pinggiran saja. Baru pada tahun 1995 ia mengeluarkan album Kupu-Kupu Kertas (didukung oleh Ian Antono, Billy J. Budiardjo (alm), Purwacaraka, dan Erwin Gutawa) dan Cinta Sebening Embun (didukung oleh Adi Adrian dari KLa Project). Pada tahun 1996 ia mengeluarkan album Aku Ingin Pulang (didukung oleh Purwacaraka dan Embong Rahardjo). Dua tahun berikutnya ia mengeluarkan album Gamelan yang memuat 5 lagu lama yang diaransemen ulang dengan musik gamelanoleh Dwiki Darmawan dan Kiwir. Pada tahun 2000 Ebiet mengeluarkan album Balada Sinetron Cinta dan tahun 2001 ia mengeluarkan album Bahasa Langit, yang didukung oleh Andi Rianto , Erwin Gutawa dan Tohpati. Setelah album itu, Ebiet mulai lagi menyepi selama 5 tahun ke depan.
Ebiet adalah salah satu penyanyi yang mendukung album Kita Untuk Mereka, sebuah album yang dikeluarkan berkaitan dengan terjadinya tsunami 2004, bersama dengan 57 musisi lainnya. Ia memang seorang penyanyi yang terilhami oleh alam, sosial, ketuhanan dan kemanusiaan sehingga wajar ada beberapa lagunya yang terinspirasi oleh bencana alam, sehingga lagu-lagunya sering menjadi tema bencana. Two years later he released the album Gamelan which includes five old songs re-arranged with music gamelanoleh Dwiki Darmawan and Kiwir. In 2000 Ebiet out the album Ballad of the soap opera Love and in 2001 he released the album Language of Heaven, which is supported by Andi Rianto, Erwin Gutawa and cultivation. After that album, Ebiet start again alone for the next 5 years.
Ebiet is one singer who support the album Kita To Them, an album that was issued related to the tsunami of 2004, along with 57 other musicians. He was a singer inspired by the natural, social, divinity and humanity so naturally there are some songs that are inspired by the natural disaster, so the songs are often the theme of disaster.
