Ayam ketawa atau juga dikenal dengan sebutan ayam jantan dari timur adalah ayam asli Indonesia yang berasal dari kabupaten Sindrap, Sulawesi Selatan.Ayam ketawa atau disebut dengan “Manu Gaga” dalam bahasa Bugis merupakan hewan yang masuk dalam kategori unggas yang dilindungi, dikarenakan keberadaannya langka dan hampir punah.
Ayam ketawa ini dulu hanya dipelihara dan berkembang biak di lingkungan bangsawan Bugis sebagai simbol status sosial yang menggambarkan tentang kesuksesan, keberanian dengan istilah “ Jantan“.
Ayam ketawa ini, secara fisik, baik perawakan maupun bulunya hampir sama dengan ayam kampung.Keunikannya pada suara di penghujung kokok yang terdengar seperti suara ketawa manusia.Sementara itu, dalam sekali bertelur, betina produktif bisa menghasilkan rata-rata sebelas sampai 13 telur.Tetapi daya tetas tinggi tidak terdapat pada telur pertama hingga tiga.Baru pada telur keempat, dan seterusnya dipastikan telur terisi dengan embrio.Pada ayam ketawa ada perbedaan penamaan antara jantan dan betina.Ayam ketawa jantan disebut Lai, sedangkan ayam ketawa betina disebut Birang.
