In each game fighting of the series, the player controls one of several characters directly based on Narutimate Ultimate Ninja characters. Players then put their characters into another character, usually controlled by the games but this could also be another player depending on the mode being used. The goal of each game is to reduce the opponent's strength to zero by using basic attacks and unique special techniques for each character, and derive from the techniques they use in the source document.
For some techniques, the characters are available "psychometric gauges", which degrade upon execution. Most of the techniques are not performed in real time, and instead there is an accompanying movie theater. Also, some characters can be transformed into alternate forms of battle alternation, though their status bar is leaked or the players cancels the transformation, players can choose a partner character to help them in battle. Each partner character has different abilities based on their skills from the series. While Ultimate Ninja Heroes allows the choice of up to three partner characters, although both abilities can be combined to create stronger effects.
Depending on the completion time and remaining stamina, the player is given an "S" rating through "C", where S is the highest possible rating. If it receives S or A, a rampage occurs.
