Las Leyendas son un conjunto de narraciones de carácter postromántico escritas por Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer y publicadas entre 1858 y 1864. Estas narraciones tienen un carácter íntimo que evoca el pasado histórico y se caracterizan por una acción verosímil con una introducción de elementos fantásticos o insólitos. Fueron publicadas en periódicos madrileños de la época como El Contemporáneo o La América.
Bécquer publicó la mayoría sus leyendas de forma irregular, en formato folletín o novela por entregas, en un margen de 6 años, de 1858 a 1864, en varios periódicos madrileños de la época, como El Contemporáneo, en el que ejerció como redactor, o la Crónica de Ambos Mundos y La América. Ese tipo de difusión condicionó en gran manera la temática y el momento de publicación de cada una. El Monte de las Ánimas se publicó poco antes del día de Todos los Santos, Maese Pérez, el organista, en Navidad, y El miserere, en Semana Santa. Además, la publicación de algunos de ellos en varias entregas, como Rayo de Luna, hizo que su estructura variara un poco para mantener la intriga durante todo el relato.
