La palabra Biblia procede, a través del latín biblĭa, de la expresión griega τὰ βιβλία τὰ ἅγια (ta biblía ta hágia; ‘los libros sagrados’), acuñada por primera vez en el Primer Libro de los Macabeos 12:9,4 donde βιβλία es el plural de βιβλίΠν (biblíon, ‘papiro’ o ‘rollo’ y, por extensión, ‘libro’).
