This app provides a definitive description of 'vintage style', would be the eternal shift dress. A shift dress has been a personal favourite of mine for years. Lily Pulitzer, the renowned designer and socialite, was responsible for making the design that was sometimes seen as a work-wear dress shape, became upper class, chic and main stream. She was a cousin of Jackie Kennedy, being a debonair housewife, she started selling juice at Palm Beach, Florida. She wanted to make a dress that hid the juice stains, so she made lots of printed shift dresses that were easy to wear. From having a humble juice stand, she was asked by well-heeled ladies who, driving by, wanted to buy the dress instead.
Lily Pulitzer had turned her interest into a business, getting her famous cousin to wear her creation which simply boosted the shy designer into the limelight. So the dress became what every housewife wanted to wear, and the colour variations of the designs inspired for many years to come.
With the trend of skinny jeans and leggings becoming the legendary most hard working item in our wardrobe, the dress inevitably became our second favourite. Falling short on our mid thigh, with no clingy fabric, just easy-to- breathe cotton or other natural materials, and no restricted waist line to confine you to eat just a salad leaf, the dress has become the thing to wear over skinny jeans or leggings.
The vintage dress from the 60s has certainly proved one of the most versatile outfits that has translated to the modern age. For those of us that haven't got an enviable figure like la Olivia Palermo, we can at least be glamorous without any pain in a vintage style shift dress. Choose from a graphical pattern, colourful floral prints, or even tribal geometrical patterns, there's always a choice out there for you.
