Sejarah Menuju lahirnya “Sumpah Pemuda”
Perjuangan bangsa Indonesia melawan penjajah dapat dikelompokkan menjadi dua, yaitu sebelum tahun 1908 dan sesudah tahun 1908. Perjuangan sebelum tahun 1908 selalu dapat digagalkan oleh penjajah. Hal itu karena perjuangan masih bersifat kedaerahan, dan perjuangan masih berupa perjuangan fisik dengan senjata yang sederhana. Kegagalan perjuangan yang telah dilakukan mendorong pejuang mengubah taktik perjuangan melalui organisasi sosial politik. Awal tahun 1908 mulailah bermunculan berbagai organisasi pergerakan nasional seperti Budi Utomo, Sarekat Islam, Indische Partij, dan PNI. Sejak saat itu arah perjuangan bangsa Indonesia pun makin tegas, yaitu mewujudkan persatuan nasional.
Pada tahun 1908, nama Indonesia untuk pertama kalinya di gunakan oleh Perhimpunan Indonesia. Perhimpunan Indonesia adalah organisasi yang didirikan oleh pelajar-pelajar Indonesia di negeri Belanda. Organisasi ini awalnya bernama Indische Vereeniging. Namun, pada tahun 1922 nama itu diganti menjadi Indonesische Vereeniging, tetapi pada tahun yang sama namanya berubah menjadi Perhimpunan Indonesia. Para pahlawan kita, seperti Ki Hajar Dewantara, Budi Utomo, dan DR. Mohammad Hatta, turut memopulerkan istilah Indonesia untuk mengimbangi istilah ‘Hindia Belanda’ yang dipakai oleh pemerintah kolonial Belanda saat itu.
