Secara bebas, ‘ubudiyah adalah sikap penghambaan. Sikap merendah, menjadi hina dan lemah dihadapan yang dihamba.
Setelah memahami bahwa di dalam diri manusia ada “bashirah” yang selalu mengamati, Lathifah Ruhiyah -kata Imam Ghazali-, alias sejatinya diri; kita menjadi tahu bahwa ternyata yang beribadah itu adalah yang “di dalam sini”, diri yang sejati itu.
Setelah mengetahui yang beribadah adalah “yang sejati” itu, permasalahannya adalah penafsiran terhadap makna ibadah.
Satu penafsiran yang sudah jelas, adalah ibadah sebagai sebuah ritual fisik, tetapi ada lagi penafsiran makna ‘ubudiyah, yaitu sikap penghambaan. Sikap menjadi rendah dan hina dan lemah dihadapan yang dihamba.
