Além do Brasil, o sabiá-laranjeira também é nativo da Argentina, Bolívia, Paraguai e Uruguai.
Ocorre numa ampla área que se estende nordeste do Brasil até o sul da Bolívia e norte-leste da Argentina.
Tem plumagem parda, com exceção da região do ventre, destacada pela cor vermelho-ferrugem,
levemente alaranjada, e bico amarelo-escuro. As patas são cinzas,
o olho negro circundado finamente de amarelo e a garganta é esbranquiçada rajada de marrom,
o peito é cinza-pardo, que vai mudando para um alaranjado opaco no ventre.
Mede cerca de 25 centímetros de comprimento e pesa, o macho 68 gramas, a fêmea 78 gramas.
A espécie apresenta por vezes colorações aberrantes (leucismo, albinismo e flavismo),
que podem estar ligadas a alterações no seu ambiente ou mutações genéticas.
O poderoso canto, que ocorre no alvorecer (madrugada) e à tarde, tem a função de demarcar território e,
no caso dos machos, para atrair a fêmea. A fêmea também canta, mas numa frequência bem menor que o macho.
O canto do sabiá-laranjeira que, em geral, parece com o som de uma flauta doce, é parcialmente aprendido,
havendo linhagens geográficas de tipos de canto: em outras palavras,
nenhum pássaro da espécie canta exatamente como o outro.
Habita originalmente florestas abertas e beiras de campos,
mas por ser uma espécie bastante adaptável também é encontrada nas áreas de lavoura e cidades.
Sua alimentação inclui basicamente artrópodes, larvas, minhocas e frutas maduras.
Também fazem parte da sua dieta sapos e rãs que acabaram de deixar a fase de girino.
Macho e fêmea constroem o ninho juntos utilizando gravetos, fibras vegetais e barro.
A fêmea põe de 3 a 4 ovos que eclodirão após treze dias de choco, recebendo atenção de ambos os pais.
Em três semanas os filhotes podem deixar o ninho.
Cada fêmea choca três vezes por ano e pode gerar até 6 filhotes por temporada.
