Aqidah secara bahasa berasal dari kata ( عقد) yang berarti ikatan. Secara istilah adalah keyakinan hati atas sesuatu. Kata ‘aqidah’ tersebut dapat digunakan untuk ajaran yang terdapat dalam Islam, dan dapat pula digunakan untuk ajaran lain di luar Islam. Sehingga ada istilah aqidah Islam, aqidah nasrani; ada aqidah yang benar atau lurus dan ada aqidah yang sesat atau menyimpang.
Dalam ajaran Islam, aqidah Islam (al-aqidah al-Islamiyah) merupakan keyakinan atas sesuatu yang terdapat dalam apa yang disebut dengan rukun iman, yaitu keyakinan kepada Allah, malaikat-Nya, kitab-kitab-Nya, rasul-rasul-Nya, hari akhir, serta taqdir baik dan buruk. Hal ini didasarkan kepada Hadits shahih yang diriwayatkan oleh Imam Muslim dari Shahabat Umar bin Khathab radiyallahu anha yang dikenal dengan ‘Hadits Jibril’.
